Ingredients You’ll Need, Substitutions & Notes
Please check the recipe card at the bottom of the post for exact quantities and detailed instructions (scroll down).
- Cream cheese: Use full-fat cream cheese. Low-fat and spreadable cream cheese may separate and affect how well your dip sets.
- Sour cream: You may use either full-fat or light sour cream in this recipe.
- Cooked chicken breast: Save time and pick up a rotisserie chicken if you’re at the grocery store — it’s pre-seasoned and delicious.
- Buffalo Wing Sauce: I used Frank’s Red Hot brand, but you can use your own favorite brand.
- Ranch or Blue Cheese salad dressing: The brand doesn’t matter, but the delicious tang of these dressings is important to the flavor of this epic Super Bowl snack.
- Colby-Monterey Jack cheese: This mild and delicious melting cheese makes for a smooth and creamy dip. I usually buy this cheese at my local Walmart. If you don’t find it, you can use half Colby and half Monterey Jack.
- Cheddar cheese: You can substitute for mozzarella if you prefer.
- Blue cheese (optional): If you love the bite of blue cheese, then don’t skip this ingredient. If you’re not sure, then you can either skip this ingredient altogether.
- Green onions or chives: These contrast perfectly with the rich sour cream and cream cheese base.

Recipe Tips
Stir the cream cheese and sour cream vigorously to get the smoothest result.
Bring all ingredients to room temperature before assembling.
It’s best to shred the cheese yourself, store-bought shredded cheese has a coating that means it doesn’t melt quite as well.
For an extra spicy dip, you can use more buffalo sauce or sprinkle in a bit of cayenne pepper.
Make Ahead. Assemble the dip in the baking dish as instructed, then cover with plastic wrap and place it in the fridge. When you’re ready to bake and serve, remove the plastic and bake until melty!
Storing & Reheating Instructions
The leftover dip may be covered in plastic wrap and refrigerated for 2 – 3 days. It will thicken as it cools but will soften and melt again once heated. Reheat smaller amounts in the microwave or use the oven for bigger portions.

Absolutely! Assemble the dip in the baking dish as instructed, then cover with plastic wrap and place it in the fridge. When you’re ready to bake and serve, remove the plastic and bake until melty!
I don’t recommend freezing this creamy dip as all the creamy components may separate when thawed.
