Ingredients Notes & Substitutions

  • Tomato sauce: Make sure your tomato sauce has no added salt, herbs, or spices.
  • Herbs: Dried oregano and basil. These herbs pack a punch of flavor. You can also add other herbs, such as thyme and rosemary if you want.
  • Seasonings: Garlic powder and onion powder.
  • Salt and black pepper: I prefer kosher salt (or sea salt). If you only have table salt handy, I recommend reducing the amount to half.
  • Sugar: I think a little pinch of sugar enhances the flavor of the tomatoes, but I feel left out for a sugar-free version.

Recipe Tips

Canned tomato sauce is just great for making homemade pizza sauce, but make sure no salt, spices, or herbs have been added. Some people make it with fresh tomatoes, but I find it kind of watery for my taste.

If you only have canned whole tomatoes, you can toss them in your blender or food processor to turn them into a sauce! My favorites are San Marzano tomatoes.

This batch makes enough to cover four 12-inch pizzas, depending on how much sauce you add to each pizza.

You can use this sauce on pizza, in calzones, or as a dipping sauce for stromboli or mozzarella sticks.

Variations

  • Heat. If you like the heat, you can add red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper to your taste.
  • Consistency. If you like it on the thicker side, try adding about 2 to 4 Tablespoons of tomato paste. I’d add 1 Tablespoon at a time until the desired consistency is met. The tomato paste will add a bolder flavor, but it tastes just as delicious!
  • Fresh herbs. Use fresh basil, oregano, and minced garlic and onion for a bolder flavor.

Storing & Freezing Instructions

Store: Refrigerate unused sauce for up to a week.

Freeze: You can freeze any extra pizza sauce for up to 3 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sauce does this make?

This batch makes about 4 cups of sauce, enough to cover four 12-inch pizzas; of course, it will depend on how much sauce you add to each pizza.

Can pizza sauce be frozen?

This sauce freezes beautifully. Simply place it in a zip-top bag and freeze for up to 3 months. Allow to thaw in the refrigerator before using.

Do I need to cook homemade pizza sauce?

Pizza sauce typically does not need to be cooked, which helps to add a fresh and strong tomato flavor to the pizza.

Can I use spaghetti sauce (marinara sauce) to make pizzas?

Pizza sauce usually has a smoother consistency and a fresher and stronger tomato flavor than pasta sauce. But if making this super easy 5-minute pizza sauce is not an option, you can use marinara sauce. If your pasta sauce is too chunky, blend it a bit in your blender or food processor to remove the big chunks.

    1. Hello Barbara! You can but I would recommend to simmer it for 15-20 min before adding to the pasta. Thanks for your interest in my recipe. Please come back and let me know how you like it =)

We were looking for a pizza sauce that we could make with what we had on hand: tomato sauce. This was perfect and tasted good on our chaffel pizzas.

This is a great pizza sauce recipe. I have been looking for a good homemade one for a long time and they are either too tangy or too sweet. Thank you so much for sharing this.
